Ladies and gentleman, the writer and director of Barbie, Oscar nominated filmmaker, Greta Gerwig!
Okay, to be fair, I didn’t get to interview Greta Gerwig about Barbie. But in honor of Barbie Mania, I’m re-releasing an edited interview I did with her in 2017, when her film Ladybird came out!
Greta is a huge fan of Funfetti cake and insists the box of Pillsbury cake mix is best. I attempt to challenge her beliefs and call up Food Network host Molly Yeh (Girl Meets Farm) to talk about her gorgeous homemade version of a vanilla sprinkle cake. A cake that took a lot of trial and error; Molly tested with nine different types of sprinkles to get the color and consistancy just right!
Have you seen Barbie yet??
I went over the weekend and MAMA MIA, I was not expecting to be so overwhelmed with emotion! I thought it would be a romp, albeit a quirky, nontraditional Greta Gerwig style romp.
But it was existential! Thought provoking! Smart! A deep look into our culture and society.
At least, that’s how my friends and I experienced it. When I expressed this to my mom last night, she said, “Huh. I thought it was funny when the dog was pooping!” #moms
Barbie is also deeply funny with perfect casting and great writing. I cried four times and I laughed louder than socially acceptable & yelled OH MY GOD at the screen twice and I had to hold myself back from just sobbing & it’s truly shocking and highly commendable that Mattel signed off on this project! Long story short: Greta Gerwig is a genius.
My friends and I had been planning to see the movie together for months, and since I am incapable of celebrating special events without insisting on a theme, we pre-funked with a poolside Pink Potluck. Warning: many beets were harmed in the making of this delicious dinner.
Take my advice: make friends with people who know how to cook.
We each had three servings of the beet pasta, an incredibly simple dish with big flavor thanks to a fistful of pecorino cheese, and luxuriously creamy thanks to a surprise ingredient: a tiny, boiled potato tossed into the blender with the roasted beets! The recipe comes from the new cookbook from Pasta Casalinga, a postage-stamp-sized homemade pasta restaurant tucked into Seattle’s Pike Place Market .
Pleased as punch with what we turned out, we decided to keep the party going: we’re going to cook the rainbow! Next up: all orange foods and outfits.
What should we make?? Please leave your ideas in the comments!
